About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Aviemore on Grampian Road, Happy Haggis is a beloved local fish & chips restaurant that masterfully captures the essence of British fast food with a distinct Scottish flair. Renowned for its dedication to quality and authentic flavors, this takeout gem offers a tantalizing menu that will delight both adventurous foodies and traditionalists alike.

What truly sets Happy Haggis apart is its exciting fusion of classic favorites and unique regional specialties. Their deep-fried haggis is a standout, boasting a perfectly crispy exterior that gives way to a savory, rich filling—an absolute must-try for anyone wanting a genuine taste of Scotland. Equally tempting is the vegetarian haggis, praised for its hearty texture and robust flavors, proving this iconic dish can delight all palates. Fans of sweet and savory treats will enjoy the legendary fried Mars bar, a decadent Scottish indulgence that melts in your mouth with every bite.

The seafood offerings maintain a high standard as well, with the restaurant exclusively using haddock fillets that are lightly battered to provide a delicate crunch without any greasy residue. Customers consistently rave about the lightness and airiness of the fish, which contrasts beautifully with the perfectly golden, fluffy chips. Don’t miss the seafood platter or the tempting fish sandwich if you want a little variety on your plate.

Beyond the fish and chips, Happy Haggis’s menu is a treasure trove of comforting British staples. From the classic sausage supper and onion, sausage chips & curry sauce to hearty chef’s specials like homemade steak pie and traditional McMillans haggis, each dish is thoughtfully prepared to satisfy cravings for wholesome, flavor-packed meals. Side orders such as battered onion rings and mozzarella sticks add an extra layer of indulgence, while beverages like the iconic Scottish IRN Bru perfectly complement the hearty fare.

The atmosphere at Happy Haggis is informal and inviting, a bustling yet friendly spot where locals and visitors alike feel right at home. Despite often being busy—a testament to its popularity—the staff maintain an upbeat and welcoming demeanor, enhancing the overall dining experience with genuine warmth and attentive service.

Customer feedback highlights the restaurant’s ability to deliver exceptional quality and taste. Vinny Ballantoni shares, “This place was recommended by a local who said it’s the best fish n chips in town, and it did not disappoint! No cod, only haddock fillets, which were light battered and held no excess oil... The vegetarian haggis was also amazing.” Meanwhile, Erkan Arslan praises the establishment as “world-famous and most delicious fish and chips ever,” noting the excellent customer service and his special trip from London just to enjoy the food.

Some guests mention the prices and wait times—the quality and authenticity come with a slightly higher cost and a bit of patience—but the overall consensus is clear: Happy Haggis delivers a satisfying, memorable meal that is well worth it. Deborah recommends it highly, suggesting a homemade tartar sauce addition, which speaks to the genuine enthusiasm diners have for the place and their desire to see it evolve.

In sum, Happy Haggis isn’t just another fish & chips shop; it’s a vibrant celebration of Scottish culinary culture, perfectly balancing tradition with a welcoming vibe and a diverse, crave-worthy menu. Whether you’re stopping by after a hike in the Cairngorms or simply craving an authentic British takeaway experience, this spot promises a delightful journey for your taste buds.

This place was recommended by a local who said it's the best fish n chips in town, and it did not disappoint! No cod, only haddock fillets, which were light battered and held no excess oil. This was nothing like fish n chips you get in the U.S as it was light, airy, and not greasy at all. The vegetarian haggis was also amazing. If you're not wanting to try legit haggis definitely try the vegetarian option, you won't be disappointed.

"I agree—this is the world-famous and most delicious fish and chips ever! I came all the way from London to Aviemore for hiking, and especially to enjoy this perfectly breaded fish with chips. Excellent customer service and such lovely people!"

Great Fish and Chips. Curry sauce and peas are also great. Shame it takes so long to order and it's is rather expensive.

When visiting Aviemore we went to Happy Haggis. The staff are lovely and friendly, they were so upbeat and calm considering the chippy was mobbed. The food was very good quality and would definitely recommend. Only critique I would have is home made tartar sauce could be added to the menu. Thanks!

I come across this place after searching for some eatery places while working in the area, place looked busy which was a good start. Both members of staff nice & friendly i went for a double burger with bacon as a supper, £16 ish with a can of juice too. Burger itself the burgers inside didn't taste full quality they did taste rather cheap, everything else sauce salad bacon etc was spot on as was the chips, I couldn't fault the service got a bleeper to wait, didn't wait too long for food either. 4.5 out of 5 if burgers quality was better I'd have given a 5 (The meat) Staff 5/5 Location 5/5 Price 3.5/5 Use them again? Yes friendly and enjoyed the seating area

Must be free range... First visit to Aviemore today, came to dinner time, so had a look to see where the local chippy was. We don't have haggis suppers in England, so make the most of it whenever I'm up here. Have had some good ones, and some...not so good ones. I think this might be the best one yet, must be free range haggis

Happy Haggis is a very popular chip shop for a reason - the food and service are fabulous. I was really pleased to see they had veggie haggis on the menu, which was of course deep fried deliciousness! I thought the chips were also great, and none of the food was soggy or greasy. My son really enjoyed his fish too. Staff were friendly and very efficient. We did have to wait around ten minutes or so for our food, but I thought that was quite reasonable considering how busy they were. There’s no dining tables inside, but there are some tables outside. Although most people were taking their food away. Great experience and I highly recommend visiting Happy Haggis.

Blinking lovely! Absolutely recommended. If you're vegetarian like us, there is some good options, but the deep fried veggie haggis was just to die for!! Portions were huge and cost was good for the amount of food too. Deep fried mars bar was a must try and it was delicious. The staff were brilliant, really friendly and the Happy Haggis was clean and inviting. Will visit again on our next trip to Aviemore!
